The Witcher 3’s Oxenfurt Gets a Fanmade Medieval Map
With Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop, one Reddit user managed to design a stunning recreation of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s Oxenfurt map. A massive area governed by Redanian rule, Oxenfurt counts as the second largest city in The Witcher 3 behind Novigrad.
Oxenfurt first becomes a main point of interest during the Act I questline, once Geralt of Rivia finds himself saddled with helping the Bloody Baron reunite with his missing wife and daughter. Players have several other reasons to explore the area, too, thanks in large part to the various side quests, Contracts, and other miscellaneous objectives. In terms of the overarching narrative, Oxenfurt is arguably most memorable because of Geralt’s gruesome encounter with Whoreson Junior. And, as many may recall, the Redanian city also plays a pretty substantial role in The Hearts of Stone story expansion. This section of The Witcher 3’s enormous open-world evidently left a lasting impact on one player in particular.
Reddit user Vytiz recently shared their recreation of The Witcher 3’s Oxenfurt map and its surrounding areas. In a subsequent post, the Redditor explained the map was designed for a personal game of the Witcher Tabletop Role-Playing Game using Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop. Interestingly, the design style borrows heavily from Kingdom Come: Deliverance‘s in-game map. Vytiz additionally noted that their iteration of Oxenfurt is set in 1270, whereas The Witcher 3 takes place in 1272. The full fan-made map features in the image below:
Needless to say, the above is an impressive piece of work replete with intricate details that require close inspection. And fans in the Reddit thread are already hoping someone in The Witcher 3’s modding community will mod Vytiz’ version of the Oxenfurt map into the base game. It certainly seems as though it would prove a welcome addition to the overall experience.
CD Projekt Red originally released The Witcher 3 on PC and consoles in May 2015 to widespread acclaim. Considered a genre-defining title, the award-winning adventure remains one of the highlights of the last console generation. Now players are eager to get their hands on a new-gen version for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Though CD Projekt Red previously announced plans to launch the upgrades in late 2021, such a release window now seems uncertain.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available across Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms.
